Evaluation.

Unit x has been a very exciting project and i would say i have gained quite a lot of new skills from this task from working in a group to improving my Photoshop skills. I thought working in a group for this project may have been difficult but i felt our group worked really well together, we corporated and understood each other well. Working in a team gave me an insight of how others worked and this improved my people skills. Each person from our group came from a different textiles background as some had main strengths in hand embroidery, dye, machine embroidery , Photoshop etc and i felt this combination worked well together and this helped me become stronger in other areas in textiles.

As our group project was on slow is beautiful, hand embroidery fitted in perfectly and i decided to go down this route. I tried to create the mould that was on the red brick by hand embroidering. I also had a chance to make some short clips of my work to show the growing and developing in my work. Although i found it quite challenging making the clips, i quite liked making them and this has brought a new set of skills to me which will be useful for upcoming and future projects. My individual work reflected back into my group work and this can be seen in our end final film.

I felt like we all struggled on the end final film as we had lack of knowledge on how to make a film, but we survived and still managed to produce an incredible film. Overall my group were fantastic to work with and we produced a significant amount of amazing work which will be seen in our end film.

Growing inside the shirt

Heres a video I made of one of my samples growing inside a shirt. Our group wanted to portray things growing inside a shirt as it was similar to things growing inside the human body. I had to crop and edit the images on photoshop and this is my outcome.

Video projecting on shirt

Once our film was complete we wanted to project it onto a shirt that was open to show our concept of inside Manchester, however we felt that it just didn't look right, as a group we thought that the projections on the shirt looked better live maybe we could project onto a shirt in MOSI?
We have a short clip of what it did look like.

Story board ideas

This is a progression of our first story board ideas. Our group finally came up with a final story board for our inital video. We wanted elements of our samples that were growing and decaying, but we didnt want it to look as though we tried to stick everything in so we had to make it flow. Weve been playing around with some of our videos and we came up with an idea to start with the idea of breathing as it would represent growing in a way. will the audience get the meaning of our video?.. This is a list of possible ideas that could be in the final video...

  • Breathing - Vincent breathing fastforwarded and slow version- start with this?
  • The projection of breathing onto the body
  • Stop motion sample-growing and decaying? Dissolvable fabric piece? Fit this to the beat of our music
  • We could show samples dissolving in different angles
  • Projection work, beccie or vincent piece?
  • Flashing samples-emphasis on music so fits to the beat
  • Dance film piece of beccie
  • samples of emma- on the beat flashing
  • Dissolvable pieces- arm or bowl?
  • Drawing video fast forwarded- maybe flashing photoshop images
  • elements of manchester
Once we came up with these ideas, we had to try and figure out whether the audience would make sense of the video, as we knew what our idea was it was easier for us to understand, so we had to make it understandable for everyone else. We want the video to be simple but effective!

Group drawing day Video

Here is a clip of us drawing the other day, i fast-forwarded them to show how the images were growing and developing.

Group Drawing day!

Me,Sophie, Grace and Lara started drawing from our samples and images of bricks. We used a variety of media to create these brick like and mouldy textures. The day went really well, we were moving around and drawing on top of each others work which was effective and created that mouldy look we wanted to achieve. This task also gave us the chance to see how others draw which was good.We also recorded ourselves drawing to show the process of how the bricks and mould are growing.

Fashion illustrations

I decided to create some fashion illustrations of my work on the body, I really like these, these maybe could be potential designs if i was making an actual garment.

I am hard working and motivated individual who is currently at the end of my first year at MMU studying a Textiles degree. I have had outstanding experience, where I have learnt new techniques and expanded in areas that I had a main interest in such as hand embroidery. Each project has brought out my creative side and enabled me to show others what I am capable of doing. While being a full time student, I have taken a part time job where I have learnt essential skills that will be beneficial to me in any environment I am in. I have gained great customer service skills, the ability to work as a team and I am used to working in fast pace and challenging environments. This has also helped me manage my time at university, as I feel I have improved my management, timekeeping and organisational skills.

Working on tills, assuring customer’s needs are met.

Also had work experience in WHSmith (September 2007), where providing excellent customer service was the most important skill I gained. Team work and working in very busy environments were also very essential.

Interests
In my spare time I enjoy socialising with friends and family as well as working part time at Sports Direct and concentrating on university work. I also swim and jog on a regular basis to keep fit. As I have an immense passion for embroidery, every so often I create embroidery samples which are mostly hand stitched. I also regularly attended art and fashion exhibitions.

my attempt

Like Bart hess's work i tried to create my own mould but with this vein like structure on top. I Photoshoped some of my vein like samples and then layered then on top of the balloons. It gives that gruesome mouldy feel which i quite like.

Projections

Our group projected the images of our samples on top of a open shirt. We wanted to create something that was hidden inside clothing. Here are a couple of my samples that were projected.

Dissolvable fabric.

From the vein like drawing i did earlier, i thought maybe i could stitch the design onto dissolvable fabric and then attach it inside a shirt to represent the veins/lines growing within the human body. However when it actually came down to dissolving the fabric, you will see in my video that the shape of my sample changes. I like the end result of the dissolvable fabric, it still has that vein like structure.

Bart Hess

Bart hess captures vein like/linear shapes from reflections onto plastic, i really liked this idea of creating the lines from reflections. As our group were looking at the veins of the human body, this seems like a good artist that may help us. Also the Blow up image is quite interesting, it reminds me of the mould that i tried to create earlier on my samples. Maybe i could combine both mould and line together? I like the simplicity of the image, although he has just used balloons its really effective.

Nikki Stott

I came across this jewellery designer whose work looks similar to the line stitch and drawing i did earlier. The liney design she has is effective and does look like veins from the human body. I could possibly create my own similar to this by using dissolvable fabric which means ill be left with just the line stitch which would be quite interesting. I could also show my process of the dissolvable fabric coming away and leaving just the stitches left.

The lines are growing.

I started to draw in stitch and drew the lines within the red brick. Instead of trying to create 3-D mould in my other samples i tried to keep it simple. This is stitched on parcel paper. I wanted to experiment with different materials.

From my sample, I drew this in watercolours. It looks like veins  or maybe a map /route. In our group discussions we mentioned about looking at maps in manchester and how they changed over time. And also how the veins in the human body are like a map in your body only that there hidden. This would be a good concept to expand on. I found the map in the mould instead.

Its growing..

I got my idea for this sample from the red bricks, i was looking at the shape and colour with in. I created this by painting onto some white fabric, i took pictures of my process and then put them together in a video. It shows the mould growing and changing colour and eventually dying out. I edited the photos in the video on photoshop to make the colours stand out.

Mould growing...

From my brick images i started to look closer at the colour and shape and decided to interpret my thought of the mould on the brick on some  fabric. I took stages of my painting to make it seem as though the mould was growing. I could maybe produce a stop motion video of this?

Follow the red bricks...

As our group were looking at some artists that focused on using white, i tried incorporating that into this sample by using plain white fabric. I like the simplicity in it and the lines and ruffles that have been created.

From the above red brick image, i tried to create that moulded round shapes from the brick, i did this in some of my samples by adding beads and wadding. I also did some french knots to show a range of different sizes of the circular shapes. Some of my samples look like some sort of map of something which is quite interesting.
